Marks is involved with the University of Illinois Real Estate Alumni Association Board as well as the Kellogg Real Estate Alumni Board. Mark has been a member of NAIOP since 1998 and is currently a member of the Office Development IL National Forum and serves as a trustee for the American Development Political Action Committee. Formerly, Mark has served as the President of the NAIOP Chicago Chapter as well as Vice Chair for the NAIOP National Board.
Since 1991, Jim has worked throughout downtown and suburban Chicago. Michael has worked in the commercial real estate industry as a salesperson and broker for 14 years for Cushman & Wakefield, Tanguay Burke Stratton, and The Staubach Company, achieving Top Producer Status for the 2003-2004 fiscal period. Michael has represented The Archdiocese of Chicago, General Motors, AT&T, Bombardier, and the United States Federal Government in significantly valued transactions over the past decade.
While with Staubach, Michael was the point person on handling the single largest Enhanced Use Lease of its kind on behalf of The United States Department of Veterans Affairs in the Streeterville neighborhood in Chicago. The project was the first of its kind by the VA, and it is considered the single largest public private partnership of its kind in Illinois involving a Federal Agency. Michael also drafted the land acquisition strategy for The United States General Services Administration’s Chicago Federal Courthouse expansion program prior to starting his own firm, Spinnaker Real Estate Ventures, LLC.
As current board member and Former President of The University of Illinois Real Estate Alumni Forum, Michael has been active in working towards funding a Real Estate Department Chair at the University of Illinois, and led the Forum’s early support of a Chicago 2016 Olympic Bid.
In 2002, Michael founded The Adamantinoma Research Fund at RUSH University Medical Center after recovering from a cancer diagnosis of the same type the prior year. Since that time, he has worked with other organizations to raise money for the research fund, including raising over $25,000 through the Supernova event in 2003.
After graduating from The University of Illinois with a BS in Finance, Michael was employed as a chapter consultant for The Pi Kappa Alpha International Fraternity traveling to fifty college campuses throughout the Southeast United States assisting with housing and real estate issues during 1993-1994. Michael was very involved at the undergraduate level as a vice president and Midwest Regional Vice President, and subsequently as Vice President of his undergraduate Chapter Alumni Housing Corporation Board of Directors, and President of The Chicago Alumni Association.
He holds a State of Illinois Real Estate Brokerage License, and is a Certified Commercial Investment Member of The Commercial Real Estate Investment Institute. He is a member of The Chicago, Illinois, and National Association of Realtors, has chaired The Mid Day Club Associate Board, as well as The Chicago Community Trust Young Leaders Fund Committee on Neighborhoods. Michael currently serves The Mid Day Club as part of the membership committee, and the Chicago Yacht Club as part of the Membership, Sponsorship, and Education Committees, as a Director of The Illinois Fatherhood Initiative (www.4fathers.org), and was recently invited to membership in The Economic Club of Chicago.
Recreationally, Michael is an avid sailor, having competed four times in The Chicago Race to Mackinac, the oldest and longest freshwater sailing race in the world, twice as skipper and finishing 95th of a field of 299 yachts in 2006. Currently, Mark is the Managing Director of Millennium Development Group, LLC which is a national real estate company that specializes in government build-to-suit leaseback projects and the development of publicly-owned real estate. Millennium works with the public sector in the markets of commercial office, military, health care, transit and urban redevelopment to create new real estate development opportunities across the country through public/private ventures. Millennium is comprised of two major companies in the real estate and construction fields today – U.S. Equities based in Chicago, IL and Walbridge Aldinger based in Detroit, MI. Through the combined resources of both companies, Millennium provides Asset Management, Construction, Development, Leasing, Property Management and Real Estate Consulting services to its public sector clients. Millennium also specializes in working with various public sector clients for Enhanced Use Lease developments across the United States to optimize available land uses. Prior to joining Millennium Development Group, Mark was a Senior Project Manager with the architectural and engineering firm of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, LLP where he oversaw the planning and design of many domestic and international large scale projects, with a specialization in the government market. Mark was SOM’s Project Manager for the new NATO Headquarters in Brussels, Belgium with a construction budget of over $500 million; it will serve as the new headquarters for the multi-national organization. He also managed the Renovation of the E. M. Dirksen Federal Courthouse building in Chicago, originally designed by Mies van der Rohe, and received a Certificate of Achievement from the General Services Administration for his work. Mark was also a part of the management team for the new U.S. Patent Trademark Offices in Alexandria, Virginia, which is the fifth largest federal complex in the United States and one of the largest build-to-suit leases the General Services has ever completed. He received his Bachelor of Arts in English Literature with a minor in medieval history at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. During his undergraduate tenure, he attended Corpus Christi College at Oxford University, Oxford England as a study abroad program. He later received his Masters in Architecture at the University of Illinois at Chicago, receiving a number of awards for his design abilities. In 2002, Mark was appointed by Governor George Ryan to the seven-member board of the Capital Development Board (CDB) for the State of Illinois and continues to serve as one of its seven board members. The CDB is responsible for administering the State of Illinois construction funds and oversees more than 1,200 active projects every year. Mark is also a Member of the American Institute of Architects; National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) registered; as well as a Committee Member on the Membership Committee of The Economic Club of Chicago; and he is a board member of the University of Illinois Real Estate Alumni Board.
